Shadowmoss Swim Team
The Shadowmoss Sharks Swim Team was formed in 1980 and has enjoyed much success in the last several years. Last year, the team finished 5th out of 27 teams participating in the City of Charleston Championship swim meet and had several Top 10 performances in individual events and relays.
Since 2001, the team has been coached by Brad Blake, who grew up swimming in the West Ashley area and now teaches math and coaches at West Ashley High School. Under his leadership, the team has grown significantly. In 2006, Sharks have about 125 swimmers ages 4 to 18.
In addition to teaching swimming, Coach Brad has made team-building a priority with events like Swim Team Olympics, an annual RiverDogs outing, team dinners, parties and more.
As the only pool in this part of West Ashley big enough to support a swim team, Shadowmoss draws kids from many surrounding neighborhoods. While swimmers are encouraged to be members of the pool, the Shadowmoss Country Club also allows families to have "swim team only" memberships that allow kids to be at the pool during practices and swim team events.
To be a member of the swim team, kids must be at least 4 years old and able to swim one length of the pool on their own. Swim lessons are also available for those not yet ready to join the team.
Registration is held in mid-April each year, with practice starting at the end of April for older swimmers and the beginning of May for younger swimmers. Swim meets are held on Tuesday and Thursday nights in June and the City Meet is in mid-July.

The West Ashley Circle
One of the many SC Dept of Transportation projects that received the go ahead with news of the ½ cent sales tax passing with voters in November is the West Ashley Circle. The 2,000-foot diameter traffic circle will surround the intersection of Bees Ferry Rd. and Glenn McConnell Parkway, a well-known traffic hotspot in West Ashley. The road will both circumvent traffic and cultivate vehicle and pedestrian access to new developments in the area. Not the least of these developments is the Wal-Mart Super Center, which opened in March, 2006, will be accessible from the southwest corner of the West Ashley Circle. Residents of the area will also enjoy new mixed-use developments here that will house restaurants, shops, offices, and potentially, residential areas.
The new circle is an indicator of the wonderful growth West Ashley has seen in recent years. At Matrix Properties, we're not surprised at all. We take pride in focusing on West Ashley real estate because we know that there's something here for everyone. Give us a call today to find your Charleston dream home, West of the Ashley.
