The center of the medical community in Charleston is in downtown, where the Medical University of South Carolina meets Roper Hospital, the oldest health care facility in South Carolina. MEDUCARE, the helicopter medical transport service that serves the entire Charleston region, operates from this medical center. It transports patients from as far as 200 miles away, and can deliver them to hospitals within 30 minutes.
