Education
The Charleston region is committed to the future of our children, and the four school districts that span our three counties reflect that commitment. More than 87,000 students are enrolled in more than 130 schools in greater Charleston's school districts, which include Charleston County, Berkeley County, Dorchester County Two and Dorchester County Four. 40% of our teachers hold a Master's Degree or higher. No matter where you decide to buy a home in Charleston, you can feel confident in the abilities of the school district and educational professionals in your area.Charleston County School District recently began a plan that is going to pump $365 million into facility improvements and new schools over the next several years. In all, there will be four (4) new high schools and two (2) new elementary schools, with complementary renovations to many of the existing schools in the county. The first completed project, West Ashley High School, was completed in 2001. It's one of the reasons that Matrix Properties is proud to focus on West Ashley real estate.
Several years ago, Berkeley County residents passed a $192 million bond referendum to build three (3) new schools and renovate many more in the county. This project is now more than two thirds complete. From an educational perspective, Berkeley County has been recognized for its commitment to both teacher training and the use of computer technology in the classroom.
Dorchester School District Two has been chosen by Money Magazine as one of the top 100 school districts in the nation. Of the 16 schools that make up the district, five (5) have been chosen as "Palmetto's Finest" and three have been selected as National Blue Ribbon Schools. Parents and businesses in Dorchester County show a level of dedication to educational progress that is rarely seen.
Dorchester District Four, on the far north side of Dorchester County, has a mission to develop citizens that function successfully in a changing global society. There is an emphasis on parent involvement and open communication between parents and teachers. Opportunities for extra-curricular activities and community service are many, and participation is rewarded. There are more than 2,600 students educated in the schools of this mostly rural area of the county.
